North Queensland Under 15 Schoolboys head to Gold Coast

A Big week for the North Queensland Under 15 Schoolboys as they fly out to the Gold Coast this morning. The Boys have been training for weeks in preparation for The QRFSU Under 15 Schoolboys championships where they will meet teams from regions all around the state. The TDRU wishes them all the best! Stay tuned to this article for updates on how the players are going.

Day 1

The Northern team got off to a great start yesterday when they came up against peninsula in their first game of the tournament. A strong forward performance at the set piece and solid defensive effort paved the way for tries to Jack Andreassen (Ignatius Park College) and Samuel Warner ( The Cathedral School of St Anne & St James - Townsville). They held their line for the whole game keeping peninsula scoreless, Final Score 12 - 0. Player of the match was Proserpine State High School's Jack Kearns.

In their second game of the day they faced a much larger South Coast team. Playing smart rugby and defending some of the best seen in the tournament they found themselves with a 7-0 lead thanks to a try from Ben Cornish going into the final 15 minutes. The size and strength of South Coast proved too much however as they used their advantage to muscle their way over for 4 second half tries bringing the final score to 24-7.

Day 2

Day 2 of the Championships saw Northern meet two Metropolitan teams. First up was Met North. A sluggish start to the game saw Northern down 28-0 at the break. The bruising defence they had in Day 1 was found lacking and Met North Capitilised, scoring 4 first half tries. Second half the boys picked it up, Christian Batic came on and added some fire earning player of the match while Taine Brown scored a nice try in the corner, the boys finishing up with a 33-7 loss with plenty to improve on.

The second game of the day the Northern team came up against a traditionally strong Met West. Down 19-10 the game was looking promising for both teams with the game on tilt. West then used their bench to provide a burst of impact the size and strength too much for our boys to handle. Hayden Saltner and Samuel Warner both scored tries with the latter also getting man of the match honours.

Tomorrow they play Capricorn at 10am. They will look to improve on a disappointing Day 2 and get their tournament back on track.

Day 3

an early 10am kickoff against Capricornia provided a close game between the two country regions. A strong start in which tries were scored by Taine Brown and Hayden Saltner gave Northern a steady platform improving from Friday's games. A frustrating second half then developed where the bounce of the ball and a couple of poor options didn't go their way. Defending for most of the half they were unable to hold on for the win, losing 19-14, a valiant effort. Man of the match was Ronnie Berryman for Columba Catholic College. This result put them in a playoff for 7th and 8th against Darling Downs.

Day 4

The final day of competition saw The Boys play Darling Downs. After a disappointing tournament so far Northern were looking to finish on a high note with a strong win against Darling Downs. A much improved performance where they were dominant for the most part of the game saw them run away winners 31-7. A frustrating tournament but one filled with plenty of promise and talent for the future. Well done to everyone involved including our parents who are so good at supporting our young players as well as the coaches who did a great job with this team.
