Townsville and District Rugby Union

Game On Program

It’s ‘Game on’ as Townsville and District Rugby Union are now part of the Sporting Schools program. The GAME ON program is a curriculum-based five-week program developed by the Australian Rugby Union which teaches the fundamentals of Rugby Union to Primary School students.
As well as assisting schools to increase the number of students participating in Rugby, GAME ON is part of the Federal Government’s plan to get more children active and healthy through its Sporting Schools program. The TDRU is looking forward to launching this program in the local primary schools. GAME ON will be a continuation of the Development Programs that the TDRU already run, namely the Rugby Education Program (REP) which focuses on teaching students the basic understandings of Rugby Union.

Over the 5 week program, the students will learn the fundamental skills and concepts of rugby in a professional environment, that is suitable for all Primary School aged children. The Program ends with the students playing VIVA7’s games. VIVA7’s is Australia’s new, modified version of 7’s Rugby which is ideal for school children just learning to play the game. It is a fast paced, non-contact version of Rugby Union already becoming popular in the Major Centres.

The $100 million Sporting Schools program is Australia’s largest school-based participation initiative for children. The investment will help support and bring sport, including Rugby Union to over 850,000 Australian students. The TDRU Development Staff are committed to making the most of this new and exciting program and are now available to take bookings from all the Townsville and Districts Primary Schools.

Middle School Rugby Program

The TDRU also runs programs with the High Schools in the region, this is known as our Middle School Rugby Program (MSRP)”. As opposed to previous years, where our predominant focus was on Junior School students, the TDRU development team will also now be putting an emphasis on year 7 to year 9 high school students. It is known that there has been a continual decline in terms of the number of children participating in physical activity and organised sport, particularly between the ages of 12 – 15. By offering this program, we hope to encourage more students to not only participate in Rugby Union, but to also encourage them to develop and improve their skills. With our overall aims being:

·          To introduce and strengthen the school rugby competition

·          Variety in the schools sporting program

·          To offer students a fun and healthy sporting option

·          To develop pathway between school and club participation

We have a number of different programs, and can change and manipulate each session individually so that it caters for all students- no matter the age, gender or experience. At the very least, the MSRP provides an introduction to the basic skills and game sense strategies needed for participation in rugby union.
