Game 1: Teachers West vs Charters Towers

On Wednesday night the round 10 1st Grade action kicked off with Charters Towers looking to extend their winning streak against an undefeated Teachers West side in a one-sided affair. From the first Whistle both teams were clearly ready to play, bringing the physicality and high intensity. However, as the game progressed Teachers West were able to keep the tempo and implement their game plan. Even with Bill Mitchell's and Joeys Cram’s hard work at the break down over the ball for Charters Towers, the Teachers West attack proved too strong with the reigning premiers running in 9 tries. Halves pair Tom Vison and Josh Fletcher showed their dominance in all aspects of the game with Tom picking up a double and Josh scoring one and converting 7. Back Rowers, Marty Brennan, Dan Carman and Trent Owen scored 1 each and Outside Centre Josh Lamb scoring a double with his Centre pair Tom Wells picking up one too to finish the score 59-0.

Teachers West 59 (T Vinson 2t, J Lamb 2t, T Owen 1t, M Brennan 1t, D Carman 1t, T Wells 1t, J Fletcher 1t 7c) def Charters Towers 0.

Game 2: Burdekin vs LARC’s

With the LARC’s coming off a big win in round 9 against JCU, they were more than confident they would be able to replicate their performance against the Burdekin in Ayr. With the Cane Toad’s coming off fresh from the bye and both teams known for their physicality, the match was set to be a tough contest. The game was host to some excellent skills with both sides scoring some outstanding tries. LARC’s Fullback, Jackson Pearson was a standout for the LARC’s scoring 1 try, 1 conversion and 1 penalty kick. All with the help of the hard work put in by forwards Joshua Holden and Anthony Uili in their attack and defence. However, their assault on the Burdekin wasn’t enough to put the home team away with outstanding performances from number 8 Leonard Heron and Outside Centre Lachlan Gullotta leading their side in attack and defence. Hooker, Logan Matai scoring a double, Casey Kempson scoring 1 and Flyhalf, Xander Barnard scoring 1 try, 2 conversions and 1 penalty kick. Taking the final score to 27-15.

Burdekin 27 (L Matai 2t, C Kempson 1t, X Barnard 1t 2c 1p) def LARC 15 (J Pearson 1t 1c 1p, I Dick 1t).

Game 3: North Ward vs Brothers

The final game of the weekend saw two sides bringing their A game in a back and Forth thrilling game. With both sides coming off a loss to Charters and Teachers West, it was evident they were fired up and ready to find their winning ways again. In a highly contestable game Brothers forwards Matt Fanning and Dan Cooper worked hard throughout the game to help their team cross the line. With Winger Ayden Piper scoring a double and converting one, Fullback Sam Doyle 1 and Inside Centre James Leonardi picking up 1. However, even with Brothers scoring a couple early tries in the second half, North Ward were able to stay composed, running in 6 tries throughout the game. 8 and 9 combo Dan Withers and Sam Bradley leading the way for North Ward with the forwards doing the damage. Prop Jon Salee picked up a double, back rowers Mitchell Clarke and Connor Cavallin both crossed the line, Prop Matt Corrigan scored one and replacement forward Alex Nicolosi broke through the Brother’s line to score, with Fullback Sam Delaney converting 3 to make the final score 36-22 in a great display of Rugby.

North Ward will host JCU after their week off with the bye at the Sports Reserve and in the final game of the weekend Teachers West will play the LARC’s here at Mike Carney Toyota Park.
