WELL HUNG GLASS AND ALUMINIUM 1ST GRADE COMPETITION WRAP UP

 

 

Round 9 of this years Well Hung Glass and Aluminium 1st Grade competition saw some thrilling Rugby and skills on display as teams looked to gain the upper hand and find form before the half way point of the season. In the first game at Mike Carney Toyota Park, Teachers West took on a fired up North Ward side. Next up we saw JCU take on the LARC’s and finally at Ignatius Park, Brothers looked to get a win in front of their home crowd against a tough Charters Towers side. Game 1: Teachers West vs North Ward

After a hard loss to Charters Towers, North Ward were eager to prove they are still a threat in the comp coming up against Teachers West, who remained undefeated. Both sides came out firing, with the match testing both teams early on. With the first half remaining tight. Teachers West approached close to the North Ward line and a pick and drive from prop Angus Small opened the scoring. North Ward were next to hit back after finding themselves at the Teachers West try line, with a similar try off a pick and go from Dan Withers to get North Ward on the board. Later in the first half some miscommunication from the Teachers back 3 saw North Ward capitalize on the mistake with Connor Cavallin scoring off the loose ball to finish the half just behind at 17-15. However, after the break it was a different story with Teachers West showing their resilience after their toughest first half this year. Teachers West Winger Dan Chorley running in 4 tries, Halfback Tom Vison picked up a double and Prop Angus Small grabbed another try. The solid efforts from Connor Cavallin and the rest of the North Ward side were not enough to combat against The Teachers side finishing the game 51-15.

Game 2: Brothers vs Charters Towers

At Iggy Park, Charters Towers made the trip to town to face a hungry Brothers side after their loss to Teachers West a week prior, while the Bull’s where searching for back to back wins. Early on the ball went from end to end with both teams finding it hard to break the defensive line and cross the line, a great display of running rugby. A penalty kick to the corner gave Brothers the opportunity to attack the Bulls line with their back’s going wide running a superb play that saw winger Taylor O’Brien scoring in the corner for the first try of the game. Charter’s Tower’s fought hard and persistently to score next with a pass down the short side putting Flanker Joey Cram in for a try. In the second Half Brothers were next to score through Taylor O’Brien getting his second. Charter’s Tower’s once again found themselves on the Brothers line before Prop Phil Warrina crossed the line from a pick and go to even the scores. Bull’s centre Peter Utromu broke the line and put a kick in for flyhalf Sam Knuth who crashed over the line for a brilliant try. Brothers hit back through Number 8 Malakai Taufa hitting a hole to run and score for Brothers in the dying stages of the match. However, the outstanding efforts from Charters Tower’s 8 and 9 duo William Mitchell and Karl Knuth saw the Bulls prevail 25-15.

Brothers – 15 (Taylor O’Brien 2t, Malakai Taufa 1t)

Game 3: JCU vs LARC’s

The last game of the weekend took place at Mike Carney Toyota Park, with the LARC’s taking on JCU. With both sides coming off losses and desperate to get into the winning column, it was set to be a good match up. The opening 15 minutes was an arm wrestle with both sides breaking the line and playing some unbelievable rugby. But with both sides rough defence, they struggled to find the line. However, the LARC’s persistence saw them take full control of the game late in the first half, scoring a couple of late tries to give them a narrow lead going into half time. The great defensive and attacking efforts from JCU’s Alex Vile wasn’t enough to stop the LARC’s barrage of attack. The LARC’s inside centre, Ben Pearson picked up a double out wide, with power forward Ben Lotty crashing over for the forward pack. Soloman Ricketts efforts around the park in both defence and attack rewarded him with a try of his own, with the LARC’s polishing off the game 39-0.

This week, Charters Towers look to keep the ball rolling when the clash in the match of the round against Teachers West on Wednesday night at Mike Carney Toyota Park. Burdekin return from the Bye to play JCU and in the final game of the weekend, Brothers and North Ward both look to rebound from a loss in a game that is bound to be exciting. LARCS have the bye.
