Well Hung Glass and Aluminium 1st Grade Competition Wrap Up

Round 1 at Mike Carney Toyota Park was home to six 1st grade teams in a blockbuster triple header. After years of 1st Grade glory Teachers West faced off against rivals Brothers who looked to seek revenge and put an end to Teachers win streak. Charters Towers made the trip in to face North Ward who looked to carry last seasons late run of form into the new year in a back and forth battle. Finally after coming 4th in 2018 the Burdekin took on a Laverack Army side who looked to show us why their return to the competition was worth the wait. Click Read More to see all the match wrap ups.

Game 1: North Ward vs Charters Towers

The end of 2018 saw North Ward finding some late season form, but after being denied a chance at premiership hopes in the 2018 semi-finals they looked to start fresh in 2019. Charters Towers also looked for the chance to make a good first impression in the 2019 season after having their ups and downs in 2018 being nudged out of the finals race by North Ward late in the season. A good start to the game saw Charters Towers score the first try of the match. However, with North Ward continuously applying pressure to the Charters Towers try line, the Old Boys forced several penalties and 3 yellow cards putting North Ward in the lead at half time 24-7. A couple of late tries saw the Bulls close the gap before a great run from North Ward Captain Daniel Withers saw him crash under the post securing the win 34-19.

North Ward 32 – (Connor Cavallin 1T, Dan Withers 1T, Mick Morris 1T, Jojo Waqasaqa 1T, Stuart A’vau 1T, Sam Delany 2C – 1P)

Charters Towers 19 – (Joey Cram 1T, Jack Mitchell 2T, Sam Knuth 2C)

Game 2: Teachers West vs Brothers

After a close contest in the 2018 Grand Final Teachers West took on Brothers in the centrepiece match of the day. A much younger Brothers side looked for revenge but came up against a highly experienced and skilful Teachers team and the round 1 rematch was a completely different story. Teachers put on a running rugby clinic which proved too strong for Brothers. With an outstanding first half by tight head prop Angus Small, Teachers were able to set the tone early on. Even with Brothers forwards Dan Cooper and Matt Fanning’s brilliant defensive efforts it wasn’t enough to stop Teachers back rowers Daniel Carmen and Martin Brennan and Fullback Curtis Rayment all picking up doubles to see the defending premiers finish off a polished 60-0 victory.

Teachers West 60 – (Ben Kennedy 1T, Martin Brennan 2T, Daniel Carman 2T, Daniel Chorley 1T, Curtis Rayment 2T, Nick Poole 1T, Josh Fletcher 1T – 5C)

Game 3: Burdekin vs L.A.R.C

Saturday also saw the long-awaited return of the Army back into the TDRU competition, their first encounter of the season was against Burdekin who finished up 4th in the 2018 TRDU competition. The army flew out of the blocks scoring 2 tries within the first 10 minutes to unsettle the Burdekin. With an intercept try to hooker Josh Allan on the stroke of half time only adding to the pain. Shortly after half time the Army extended their lead through some brilliant play from flyhalf Scott Doulis. Burdekin however fought back scoring two tries of their own with hooker Nathan Papale running a great line to score untouched under the uprights. But in the end the Army attack proved to strong and was largely dominated and controlled by Army’s Fullback Jackson Pearson. The final score saw Army win 25-14.

LARCS 25 - (Josh Allen 1T, Jacob Caldwell 1T, Anthony Uili 1T, Scott Doulis 1T, Dylan Johnson 1T)

Burdekin 14 - (Nathan Papale 1T, Xander Barnard 1T – 2C)

This week, North Ward seek to carry their winning form into a very tough assignment in Teachers West at Warrina Park who are eager to play their first home game of the season. Brothers and Charters Towers both look to bounce back from last weekends losses and find some winning form. The final game of the weekend will see a fresh-faced University side who will kick off their 2019 season hoping to shock the Army, facing off here at Mike Carney Toyota Park.
