Conrad Gargett 1st Grade Wrap Up – Grand Final.

Last Saturday saw the final two teams in the 2018 1st Grade competition battle it out for their chance to lift the silverware after the final whistle. There were hopes and expectations for both Teachers West and Brothers, with the game certainly living up to all the anticipation built during the week.

1st Half:

Teachers West and Brothers were without a doubt the two most deserving sides to have the privilege to battle it out for the 2018 premiership. Brothers were out to cause a major upset with Teachers West on the verge of claiming their fourth title and edging closer to Brothers record of 6 straight 1st grade premierships. After bashing away at the Brothers defensive line for multiple phases, it was the reigning premiers who crossed the line first, with prop Angus Small showing unbelievable strength to score. Brothers were quick to hit back through winger Adam Woodward to level up the score and mount the pressure back onto the defending champs. Both teams spent the last 20 minutes of the half grinding away at each other with some incredible attacking raids from both sides along with some bone rattling defence. With half-time looming it was Teachers Wests’ winger Daniel Chorley who crossed the line to give his side a narrow lead at the break 12-5.

2nd Half:

The early stages of the second half would be the pinnacle of the match, with a try for either side being the decisive factor in the outcome of the match. It was Teachers halfback Tom Vinson who used all his experience to hammer one more nail into the coffin of Brothers season, crashing over the line from close range. Brothers were struggling to find ways to respond and looked to play expansive rugby by increasing the tempo of the match. With Brothers needing to score next to stay in the fight it was reserve scrumhalf Scott Doulis who came on with some much-needed energy, setting up Adam Woodward for his second with a well waited Crossfield nudge. Brothers were in striking distance of claiming the premiership only down by five points with not long left in the match. They went for the jugular with some enterprising play in their own 22 but Josh Lamb (Teachers) had other ideas, timing his catch to perfection, plucking a wild pass before busting two tackles to all but seal a 4th straight premiership for Teachers. The final score was 25 points to 12 in favour of Teachers West.
