Prepare yourselves for a wrap up of yet another intriguing round of the Conrad Gargett 1st Grade competition!! This week’s action saw a showdown between Burdekin and Teachers West down in Ayr, and North Ward clashed with Brothers at home on Saturday. Click read more for a full recap

Game 1:

Game 1 of the round took place down in Ayr with Teachers West travelling down to take on Burdekin at home. The start of the match was delayed as the highway was cut off due to an accident, this resulted with a late finish. Burdekin knew they would have to play a high brand of rugby to be a chance of claiming a major scalp. Gritty physical defence was on display early on as the home side looked to unsettle the visitors. Because of a late start to the game, a heavy due was present, this resulted in several missed opportunities for both sides. Harry Willocks capitalised on a misread in the Burdekin defensive line with a quick snipe resulting in one of his two tries. Burdekin dug deep in the second half but were unable to gain any real ascendency over Teachers, playing a man down the entire second half due to a send-off before half time. A potent Teachers backline were able to capitalise on this advantage with winger Daniel Chorley crossing for a double in the second half. Burdekin were gifted two late consolation tires to the midfield pairing of Jeff Sullivan and Lachlan Gullotta. Teachers finished 48-14 winners to remain on top of the competition. Martin Brennan, Harry Willocks, and Daniel Chorley played well for Teachers, whilst Jeff Sullivan and Lachlan Gullotta played well for the home side.

Teachers West – 48 – Tries: Josh Fletcher 1, Aden Turner 1, Harry Willocks 2, Gene Morgan 2, Daniel Chorley 2. Conversions: Curtis Rayment 4.

Burdekin – 14 – Tries: Jeff Sullivan 1, Lachlan Gullotta 1. Conversions: Brendan Bunyan 1, Jeff Sullivan 1.

Game 2:

The final game of the weekend took place at the Townsville Sports Reserve with Brothers taking on North Ward. Brothers are known for coming out and playing fast rugby from the first whistle and Saturday was no exception. North Ward were asked to do a fair amount of defensive work early on with some of the oppositions forwards rampaging through the middle of the field. Tevita Ma’ulu’ulu sliced through the defensive line on multiple occasions to set up a couple of tries before scoring one of his own. Brothers prop Mat Holland was on the receiving end of some great ball movement for the visitors crashing over for a try on the stroke of half time. Brothers backline clicked after the break running in some well worked tries. North Wards only try of the match came half way through the second half with loose head prop Jon Salee crashing over for, yet another try from close range. After a North Ward yellow card late in the second half Brothers put the score line beyond doubt and finished the game convincing winners with the final score blowing out to 72 points to 7. Tevita Ma’ulu’ulu and Malakai Taufa played exceptionally for Brothers, whilst youngster Connor Cavallin impressed once again for North Ward.

Brothers – 72 – Tries: Mat Holland 1, Malakai Taufa 1, Tevita Ma’ulu’ulu 2, Dan Copper 1, Brendan Morgan 1, Adam Woodward 1, Tau Penitani 1, Billy Bulley 1, Jayden Timbs 2, Ayden Pyper 1. Conversions: Tau Penitani 3, Scott Doulis 3.
