Conrad Gargett 1st Grade Weekly Wrap

Buckle yourselves in and get ready for a trip around the grounds in another intriguing round of the Conrad Gargett 1st Grade competition!! This week’s action saw a showdown between Brothers and the mighty Charters Towers Bulls, as well as defending premiers Teachers clashing with potential premiers North Ward Old Boys, and finally University taking on Ross River at home.

 Game 1:

Game 1 saw a second placed Brothers outfit take on Charters Towers in a tough and physical encounter at Mike Carney Toyota Park. The Bulls came out hard from the start putting Brothers under immense pressure for the first 10 minutes. With the defensive line beginning to crack after consecutive phases, Bulls fullback Simon Panuel polished off a slick back line move to score the first try of the match. This momentum boost was short lived with some barnstorming runs from the brothers forward pack turning the game on its head with their back line capitalising. The half time score had the fish leading three tries to one. The second half saw blindside flanker Michael McGovern and winger Tom Gallegos both finish off two try performances, this resulted in Brothers running away with a win 47-5. Some stand out performances came from Michael Parker and Emil Grant in the Brothers forward as well as a speedy Jack Mitchell from Charters Towers.

Brothers – 47 – Tries: Matt Kenworthy 1, Michael McGovern 2, Michael Parker 1, Adam Woodward 1 and Tom Gallegos 2. Conversions: Declan Maguire 6.

Charters Towers – 5 – Tries: Simon Panuel 1.

Game 2:

Game 2 saw three-time defending premiers Teachers West play the underdogs in North Ward Old Boys. After a big day of rugby at the sports reserve, North Ward were looking to assert their dominance from the get go in the final match of the day. Wearing their new 20-year commemorative jersey, Old Boys held strong against an aggressive Teachers outfit. Some brilliant hands from the Teachers backline saw Harry Willocks set up Josh Lamb for 1 of his 2 tries in the game. Teachers took a 24-0 lead into the break, this lead only to be extended after half time. Second half saw playmaker Josh Fletcher score a try from long range after slicing through the defence and then finding another gear to run away with the try. Full time saw teachers maintain their dominance over the TDRU competition with a 57-0 victory. Some standout performers for Teachers were Josh Fletcher and Trent Owen, and for North Ward, Daniel Withers.

Teachers West – 57 – Tries: Kit Horwood 2, Josh Fletcher 2, Josh Lamb 2, Daniel Chorley 1, Darnell Fisher 2. Conversions: Josh Fletcher 6.

North Ward Old Boys – 0

Game 3:

Final game of the round saw Ross River Redskins play host to James Cook University. The fourth-place Redskins were looking at bouncing back from a heavy defeat last week, the only thing standing in their way was a young and exuberant University side who were chasing their first win of the competition. University held their own for most of the first half with some strong carries and solid defence. Ross River looked to play it tight, utilising their big men up front. This resulted in the forwards racking up many tries between them. Joe Taina (Number 8) and Jacob Brown (Blindside Flanker) both collected doubles in a very forward dominant game. The result saw an improved effort from the Redskins who prevailed 48-0. Because of a forward dominant game, special mentions went to Joe Taina and Jacob Brown (Ross River), and Brandon Huta (University) for exceptional games.

Ross River – 48 – Tries: Kieran Mchugh 1, Jacob Brown 2, Martin Dickinson 1, Joe Taina 2, Blake Tessier 1, Shane Collett 1. Conversions: Neil Bacasno 3, Jason Curnow 1

University – 0

This week in round 9 of the Conrad Gargett 1st grade competition kicks off on Friday night at Mike Carney Toyota Park with Charters Towers and University at 7:50pm. Both teams will be looking at bouncing back from defeats last week. Saturday sees us take the action to two major home games.
