Brolgas vs Army Wrap Up: Remembrance Day Match

Last Friday, the Townsville and District Rugby Union Castrol Brolgas took on the Army at Mike Carney Toyota Park. Spectacular scenes took place in the masters, women's and men's divisions. The Brolgas were favourites after taking out the women's and men's division, and a draw in the master's last year. With the Brolgas wishing to hold the title and the Army wanting to show everyone that they meant business; we were definitely in for a great night.

Masters Game:

After last year's 12 all draw, both teams were hungry for the win. The game soon got underway with both teams showing that age was only a number. Big hits and high class plays were on display. The Brolgas were first to put points on the board, through young gun Scott O'Neill with a great half field break. The Army hit back soon after to keep the score line close. After a while the skill and professionalism of the brolgas shown through, with many unanswered tries being put on. The physicality of the army never disappeared, but in the end the class of the brolgas was too good. Special mention must go to Shane Laskey and Scott O'Neill who combined well in the centres, creating havoc for the army defence.

Final Score: 31 - 12 to the Townsville Brolgas

The second match of the night saw the Army and Townsville Brolgas women go head to head in a tough clash. The Brolgas Women set the tone from the very beginning, hard hits and destructive runs caused problems for the Army Women. The Brolgas pilled on the points and continue this way for most of the game. The Army, however, showed that weren't going to give in. The Army broke through the brolgas defence on a few occasions, however, they were not able to capitalise on key moments of the game which could have led to tries. Special mention from the Brolgas Women must go to Jess Steel, Pia Poid, Gabby Carsten and Sian Roberts who were standouts on the night.

Final Score: 43 - 0 in favour of the Townsville Brolgas Women

The final match for the night saw the Army and Townsville Brolgas men going at it. After last year's massive win by the Brolgas, the Army were definitely out for vengeance. The game was a tough battle between the two teams with points being hard to find. Physicality from both teams was evident and seemed to grow bigger as the match went on. The patience and hard work of the Brolgas eventually showed as they wrapped up this years remembrance day match with a win. Special mention must go to Tevita Ma'ulu'ulu who was a standout for the Brolgas, with his continual hard hits and strong running. Special mention must also go to Darnell Fish from the Army who stunned the crowd with his deceptive runs.

Final Score: 19 - 5 in favour of the Townsville Brolgas

Another successful Remembrance Day match at the TDRU, we hope that next year is even bigger and better.
