Zambreros 1st Grade Wrap Up – Grand Final.

In the 2017 1st Grade Grand Final, both Teachers West and Brothers battled it out in a game that lived up to all the anticipation that had be building during the week.

Teachers West 24 (A McClymont 1t, K Horwood 1t, A Tuala 1t, T Vinson 1t, C Mason 2c) def Brothers 17 (T Ma’ulu’ulu 1t, J Martinez 2t 1c)

Teachers West and Brothers were without question the two most deserving teams to have the privilege in battling it out for the 2017 Premiership. Teachers West were too strong on the night though securing the win in a nail biting encounter. Brothers skill set was on centre stage first, where their well drilled Backline were able to create an overlap and eventually capitalise twice through their winger Jacob Martinez. Brothers were able to hit the ground running with two quick tries that left the reigning premiers stunned. Teacher’s West able to compose themselves and continually threaten the Brother’s defence. It wasn’t until their halfback Aka Tuala threw the dummy and sliced through a hole 20 metres out running over to close the margin for the Bulldogs. Both teams grinding away at each other looking for a way through and it wasn’t until the last minutes of the 1st half that Brothers flanker Tevita Ma’ ulu’ ulu crossed over extending their lead to 17-5. Heading into half time it was all Brothers, and Teachers were struggling to find the answers to respond.

After the half time break, Teachers had found a second wind, responding through their back-rower Kit Horwood who eventually scored through patient phase play. The number 9 for Teachers, had a solid performance in helping his team with the victory. With Teachers, eventually on the front foot, Aka Tuala delivered a precision pass on to a storming Alex McClymont who crossed over, levelling the score up at 17-17. Teachers were constantly out for another try to potentially seal their spot in the history books but after 2 disallowed tries it seemed that we were heading into extra time. Brother’s defence was on display with some gutsy efforts to hold out the two-time premiers. It wasn’t until 10 minutes to go that Joshua Lamb spotted a hole and sliced the ball through the defence where Tom Vinson showed some impressive speed to out run the Brother’s defenders. He collected the ball and crossed over in the corner. Colby Mason able to keep a cool calm and collected adding the extra two points, putting his team in the lead by a converted try. It seemed all over but after an awkward tackle by Teacher’s Colby Mason, he was sent to the bin with a yellow card. This lifted Brother’s confidence and they started to get a roll on, looking to come home strong and put the game into extra time. With 14 men on the field, Teachers knew they had to step up in defence, and that’s exactly what they did. Putting in one of the gutsiest defensive displays of the year to hold out Brothers. Full time score Teachers West 24 defeat Brother’s 17.
