Zambreros 1st Grade Wrap Up – Major/Minor Semi Finals

The weekend marked the beginning of finals footy with Brothers up against Teachers West and Burdekin versing the North Ward Old Boys.

Major Semi’s- Brothers 15 (J Martinez 1t 1c 1p, A Pyper 1t) def Teachers Wesr 14 (K Horwood 1t, H Huppatz 1t, C Mason 2c).

Teachers and Brothers collided together on Saturday evening producing a highly entertaining spectacle of Rugby Union. Both Brothers and Teachers were relentless, continually threatening each others line but it was Teachers that finally broke through with their back rower Hugh Huppatz crossing over where Colby Mason was able to add the extra two. Brothers desperately looking for points before heading into the second half, trying to find a way through an impressive defensive effort from Teachers. It wasn’t until last minutes of the 1st half that brothers were able to finally break the Teachers line with a simple backs move allowing Brothers fullback Ayden Piper to score in the corner ending the 1st half. Teachers bounced back in the 2nd half with their number 8 Kit Horwood adding the five-pointer after patient phase play which eventually led to the try.  Deep into the second half, the standard from either team hadn’t dropped with some heavy contact and slick ball skills still on display from both teams but Brothers proved too much to handled where their Winger Jacob Martinez went over late in the second half, converting his own try. Toward the end Brothers were awarded a penalty, allowing Winger Jacob Martinez to slot a penalty kick putting Brothers in the lead by one point. But Teachers started to march down the field and eventually won a penalty where Colby Mason attempted a shot at goal but struck the goal post and missed. The two teams didn’t stop fighting even down to the dying seconds but Brothers were able to hold out Teachers. Full Time score Brothers 15 defeat Teachers West 14.

Minor Semi’s- Burdekin 36 (A Kennedy 2t, C Wellington 2t, N Papale 1t, S Kennedy 1t 3c) def North Ward 31 (L Cavallin 1t, S Bradley 1t, L Giudes 1t, R Allen 1t, A Chrisp 1t, C Kennedy 3c).

The Minor Semi-Final didn’t disappoint with both Burdekin and Northward fighting in a valiant and gutsy effort that also went down to the wire. North Ward came out firing against an almost stagnant Burdekin outfit where they were able to stun the travellers with two quick tries. It was all Burdekin from there though where Andrew Kennedy was able to bust through showing off his speed scoring two tries. North Ward were trailing for most of the game but they didn’t stop coming, displaying a gutsy effort to keep within points of Burdekin.  North Ward half-back Sam Bradely scoring of a Burdekin error where Connor Kennedy adding the two points putting North Ward in front with only minutes to go. Burdekin settled themselves to have a final chance at keeping their Grand Final hopes alive. Burdekin didn’t stop and they were able to score to lock the game up at 31 all. Going into over time both team looked dangerous, the two teams looked certain to score on numerous occasions but some scrambling and desperate defence denied both teams of any points. It wasn’t until the dying seconds of over time that Burdekin were finally able to seal the win after Andrew Kennedy sliced through the North Ward defence which eventually led to Christopher Wellington scoring in the corner. Full time Score Burdekin 36 defeating North Ward 31.

Next Week Burdekin and Teachers battle it out for their chance to play in the Grand Final for 2017. Well done to Brothers who have progressed to the Grand Final.
