Zambreros 1st Grade Wrap Up - Round 21

Round 21 of 1st grade competition we saw Teachers West host North Ward Old boys in a close encounter, Ross River on the road at Burdekin and Charters Towers at home against Brothers.

Brothers 65 (B Morgan 1t, M Fanning 1t, M taufa 3t, M Parker 1t, T Harvey 2t, A Pyper 1t 5c, T Maujiulu 1t, D Anderson 1t) def Charters Towers 5 ( S Mackie 1t).

It was a big day out at Charters Towers, where they hosted their ladies day whilst both teams played for the John Fry Memorial Cup. Brothers proved too strong for the home team with a dominant display of football for the whole 80mins. Brothers winger Tyron Harvey opened the scoring affair crossing the line in the opening minutes. Charters Towers still put up a gutsy effort but the Brothers attack was relentless with their whole team coming together to outclass the Bulls outfit. Charters Towers didn’t finish the game without putting some points on the board with their outside centre Samson Mackie scoring the only try for the home team. Full time score Brothers 65 def Charters Towers 5.

Teachers West 17 (G Morgan 1t, R Seeto 1t, J Lamb 1t 1c) def North Ward 16 (A Crisp 1t, C Kennedy 1c 3p).

Another nail biting finish to an impressive game to watch. The two teams threw everything they had at each other with both teams displaying their dominant physical defence with Teachers and North Ward heading into the half-time break scoreless. Teachers opened the scoring through winger Rodney Seeto.  As the game went on, Teachers began to show some poor discipline where North Wards Connor Kennedy was able to capitalize, slotting three penalty kicks to put the away team in front. North Ward were leading the game with a few minutes to go but their defence started to wear thin and Teachers pounced scoring in the dying minutes of the game to win an intense game of rugby. Full time score Teachers West 17 def North Ward Old Boys 16.

Burdekin 83 (R Mcnamara 1t, J Alford 3t, J Blakey 1t, L Kerr 2t, A Kennedy 2t, R Furnell 1t, L Gullotta 1t, B Rich 1t, S Kennedy 1t 9c) def Ross River 7 (B Greene 1t 1c).

Burdekin played host to a Ross River outfit where the home team went out to make a statement heading into the finals. The attack from Burdekin seemed to never ease up with the home team sharing tries between both backs and forwards. The Burdekin showed what their outfit is capable of when they can come together and play as a team, where they amassed an astonishing 83 points. A credit to Burdekin’s defence where they only conceded 7 points from Ross River’s backrower Bernie Green. Full time score Burdekin 83 def Ross River 7.

With the regular season coming to an end only 4 teams progress to the final, unfortunately Charters Towers and Ross River didn’t secure a position in the final. Teacher West and Brothers battle it out in the major semi-final this Saturday while North Ward take on Burdekin in the minor semi-final on Sunday.
