In Round 18 of the 1st Grade competition, Brothers took on the North Ward Old Boys, while the Teachers West Bulldogs were up against the Ross River Redskins at Warrina Park. Charters Towers Bulls took on the Burdekin Cane Toads at home.

Burdekin 38 (J Mayhew 1t, D Carew 1t, K Kerr 1t, R McNamara 1t, S Kennedy 2t 4c) def Charters Towers 19 (S Makie 1t, C Smith 2t, S Knuth 2c).

A home game for the Bulls on Friday night, saw the Charters Towers team take the field against the Burdekin Cane Toads. The first half was a very tough contest between both teams. The Bulls were solid at the breakdown, maintaining possession well. Burdekin did well in attack, cracking the Charters Towers defence on a few occasions; which led to tries. Standout in the first half went to Callum Smith who crossed the line twice for Charters Towers. The first half was an exciting contest, which had the scores locked at 12 all. The second half was a new story entirely. The classy Burdekin side took the lead and continued to expand on it. The Bulls missed various opportunities to score in comparison to the Toads who capitalised on their chances and put points on the board. Burdekin through some spectacular backline moves were able to break the Bulls backline on a couple of occasions, leading to more points. Charters Towers, however, launched a final attack play, which saw Samson Makie weave through the Burdekin defence, to score an almost full field try. The final score was 38 points to 19 in favour of Burdekin.

Brothers 78 (B Morgan 1t, T Ma’ulu’ulu 2t, D Cooper 1t, T Gallegos 1t, B Bulley 3t, A Woodward 1t, A Pyper 3t 9c) Def North Ward 12 (C Kennedy 1t 1c, D Williams 1t).

Mike Carney Toyota Park hosted one 1st Grade game for the weekend. This match saw Brothers take on North Ward. Potential premiers and second on the ladder, the Brothers team definitely showed the rest of the competition that they meant business. The Old Boys struggled, with various players missing from their side. A fairly one-sided match, saw the brother team pile on the tries against the North Ward outfit. Brother maintained possession well, dominated in attack and put points on the board through both the back and the forwards. The Old Boys never gave up, showing heart till the very end. North Ward were able to put two tries on their opponents, with the end score being 78 points to 12, in favour of the Brothers side. Special mention must go to Billy Bulley and Ayden Pyper who both claimed hat tricks. For North Ward, special mention must go to Matthew Corrigan who picked up the referee’s points for his efforts.

Teachers West def Ross River via forfeit.

Due to a low number of players, Ross River Redskins forfeited on Saturday against the Teachers West Bulldogs.

Next week we will see Brothers take on Ross River at Ignatius Park College, while North Ward verse Burdekin at Mike Carney Toyota Park. Teachers West and Charters Towers both have a bye for this round.
