Zambreros 1st Grade Wrap Up - Round 17

In round 17 of the 1st grade competition the Brothers pack took on the North Ward Old Boys at the Sports Reserve. Over at the Bindal Sports Grounds, the Burdekin Cane Toads took on the Ross River Redskins. Mike Carney Toyota park hosted the 1st grade encounter between the Charters Towers Bulls and the Teachers West Bulldogs.

 A Grade: Brothers 36 (J Martinez 2t 3c, M Holland 1t, T Ma’ulu’ulu 1t, J Timbs 1t, M Taufa 1t) def North Ward 19 (C Kennedy 2t 1c, J Pullen 1t, B Williams 1c).

The North Ward Old Boys hosted Brothers at the sports reserve for their Ladies day. It was North Ward and Brothers’ 3rd fixture off the year and was another outstanding game of rugby. North Ward were fighting to cement their spot in the top 4 whereas Brothers needed a bonus point win to stay on track of winning the Minor Premiership. The game started with both teams throwing the footy around and testing the defences. Early tries for North Ward were scored by Connor Kennedy, who got on the outside of the Brothers defensive line through some gallant work by their forwards and crisp passing by the backs. A real grind began in the closing stages of the first half as both teams began to tire and mistakes started to occur. This put an emphasis on the Scrum and lineout set piece. The teams went into halftime 19-14 to Brothers. In the second half, it was any teams’ game as many tries went begging. It was not until 10 minutes to go that Brothers scored 3 quick tries through Jacob Martinez, Malakai Taufa and Jayden Timbs compared to North Ward’s 1, that edged them to a victory. The final score 36-19 in favour of Brothers.

Burdekin 31 (R Aguirre 2t, K Kerr 1t, L Smith 1t, C Twamley 1t, S Kennedy 3c) def Ross River 10 (L Pakome 1t, B Pearson 1c 1p).

A home game for Ross River, at the Bindal Sports Grounds, was assured to be a hard fought game. The Redskins came out desperate to show their home crowd and supporters their style of football. Physical in attack and defence, Ross River were still unable to contain the mighty Burdekin side. The Cane Toads seemed to crack the Redskins' defence on multi occasions, especially through back line moves which led to tries on the edge. The Burdekin out classed the Redskins to take out the game, 31 points to 10. This win will have definitely boosted the confidence of the Cane Toads, as we near finals.

 Teachers West 45 (G Morgan 2t, D Carman 1t, K Nielsen 1t, R Seeto 1t, J Lamb 1t, K Horwood 1c, C Mason 1t 4c) def Charters Towers 12 (D Knuth 2t, S Knuth 1c).

Another great match between the Bulls and the Bulldogs saw both teams come out firing from the very start. Teachers West again put on a classy performance, holding possession for most of the game. The Bulldogs had the Bulls on the backfoot with great attacking plays through both the forwards and the backs. Teachers West dominated in the set piece, while the Bulls were competitive when counter attacking and the breakdown. Charters Towers as they always do, showed their never die spirit as they continued the fight till the very end. The Bulls had minimal possession in comparison to Teachers West, however, they were able to put winger, Dylan Knuth over for 2 tries. It was noted that the Bulls scrum had improved greatly since the start of the year. Promising signs for the future of the young team. The final score ending up 45 points to 12 in favour of Teachers West.

In this week’s round of the 1st Grade competition, we will see Charters Towers at home, take on Burdekin. While, over at Mike Carney Toyota Park, we will see Brothers verse North Ward. A home game to Teachers West will see them host the Ross River Redskins.
