Zambreros 1st Grade Wrap Up - Round 15

With only 6 rounds left before finals, the weekend saw more great displays of rugby. It was home games for Burdekin, North Ward and Brothers, with no games at Mike Carney Toyota Park. The top of the table Teachers West pack made the journey down to the Burdekin to take on the 3rd ranked Cane Toads, who were looking to snatch a win at home. Brothers took on Ross River at Ignatius Park College, with Ross River looking to pull off a win after their defeat to Teachers West last week. Charters Towers made the trip up to take on North Ward at the Sports Reserve, with both teams looking for a win after defeats last week.

Brothers vs Ross River:

Brothers 19 (E Grant 1t 1c, J Martinez 1t 1c, A Pyper 1t) def Ross River 14 (J Munro 1t, T Torpelund 1t, P Vereakula 2c).

In the closest game of the Weekend, Brothers narrowly prevailed over Ross River, 19 points to 14. Ross River came out in strong fashion, holding possession well for most of the first half. The Redskins were very physical in the contact and were out to prove themselves. Ross River later in the first half lost their way at little, in which Brothers capitalised on scoring 2 tries. Ross River hit back with a try, but brothers replied with another, leading into half time 19 – 7. Tries to Emil Grant, Jacob Martinez and Ayden Pyper from Brothers and Topey Torepland from the Redskins. The second half was a different story, with Ross River coming out of the break enthused. The Redskins mounted on the pressure, continually pushing for more points. In the end Brothers did well to hold out the raging Ross River, who let one try go begging. Ross River crossed the line through Joseph Munro right near full time, to conclude the game 19 points to 14, in favour of Brothers.

Teachers West vs Burdekin:

Teachers West 50 (A McClymont 3t, T Vinson 1t, K Nielsen 1t, H Huppatz 1t, G Morgan 1t, J Lamb 1t 5c) def Burdekin 12 (J Sullivan 1t, D Kerr 1t, A Kennedy 1c).

Teacher West came out in similar fashion, with a flying start against the Burdekin pack. Teachers West put on 3 quick tries. The Teachers backline seemed unstoppable with a display of mistake free footy for the first part of the game. Burdekin, however, found a way to slow the Teacher West Pack. The Toads with possession found some spark at the end of the half scoring 2 tries from hooker, Jeffrey Sullivan and flanker Duncan Kerr.  The first half ended with Teachers West comfortably ahead, 36 – 12. The second half was looking to be a repeat of the first half, with Teachers West, coming out firing again. The Bulldogs piled on more points in the early stages of the second half, looking very much unstoppable. The Toads slowed the scoring rate of Teachers West pack, but were unable to put points on in the second half. The final score in favour of Teachers West 50 points to 12.

North Ward vs Charters Towers:

North Ward 57 (S Bradley 2t, J Salee 2t, D Withers 2t, R West 1t, C Kennedy 1t 1c, L Cavallin 1t, A Rio 5c) def Charters Towers 5 (J Robins 1t).

North Ward surely impressed their home crowd with a stunning display of rugby, which led to them smashing the Charters Towers Bulls. The Charters Towers Bulls struggled with numbers and producing a less than full strength pack, against a well composed Old Boys outfit who seemed like they couldn’t make a mistake. North Ward came out with a strong desire to win, putting points on the board almost immediately. The Bulls struggled to contain the rampaging forward pack, who seemed to create opportunities from their strong running. The Old Boys dominated across the paddock, with the Bulls struggling to maintain possession. Charters Towers at times showed stints of good rugby, but never seemed to have the ball. When the second half came around, with the Bulls looking weakened again through a loss in players from injury in the first half. It was looking like a rewrite of the first half, however, the bulls never die spirit showed through finding their way down the field, to cross the try line through captain Josh Robins. The final score was 50 points to 5 in favour of North Ward.

This weekend sees Charters Towers, take on Burdekin at Mike Carney Toyota Park, along with Ross River taking on North Ward later in the day. While over at Ignatius Park, a top of the table clash will be taking place between Teachers West and Brothers. For full draws and game times visit: http://tdru.com.au/draws
