Zambrero's First Grade Wrap up- Round 10

In round 10 of the Zambrero’s A grade competition, Teachers West looked to bounce back after their first loss of the season taking on Burdekin in the early game at Mike Carney Toyota Park. In the later game at Hugh St -Charters Towers, chasing their maiden victory, took on Ross River Redskins in a battle to keep their finals hopes alive while North Ward after back to back wins in previous weeks looked to unsettle Brothers at their first home game of the year to cement their spot in the top 4.

 Brothers 38 (A Pyper 2t, M Taufa 1t, S Anderson 1t, B Bulley 1t, T Harvey 1t, J Gough 4c) def North Ward 26 (J Salee 1t, D Withers 1t, S Bradley 1t, B Williams 1t, C Kennedy 3c)

Brothers faced off against a fast-starting North Ward team in their first home game of the year at Ignatius Park in an early afternoon match with plenty of tries scored. North Ward jumped out of the blocks early with early tries seeing them lead 12 nil before Brothers fought back to square the ledger 12 all at the Half Time break. After half time North Ward picked up the pace with their forwards dominating possession and the scoreboard mid-way through the second half leading by 12 at one stage in the match. But the Brothers backline fired late thanks to an injection from their bench in the last 20 minutes. Some classy length of the field efforts sealed the deal for the home team with Brothers closing out the bonus point win in the dying stages. Brothers Backs Brendan Morgan and Ayden Pyper were standouts along with scrum half Spencer Anderson whilst Brolgas Scrum Half Sam Bradley was the pick from the North Ward team.

 Charters Towers 15 (Knuth 1t, S Knuth 1t, S Makie 1t) def Ross River 10 (J Tonu 2t).

Charters Towers had been building towards a victory over the last fortnight with narrow losses to both North Ward and Burdekin in previous weeks, and the newcomers sent a warning message to the rest of the TDRU Competition on Saturday evening with their first win in the A Grade competition in over 16 years. The game was a tight affair throughout with Redskins fighting hard to gain ascendency in the forwards in particular with Front Rower Jesse Tonu scoring a double. Redskins forward John Cini and scrum half Blake Tessier were standouts for Ross River whilst Second Rowers from the Bulls Josh Robins and Callum Smith more than held their own against the big Redskins pack. But it was the Bulls speed men that got them over the line with flyhalf Sam Knuth, winger Dylan Knuth and outside centre Samson Makie bagging tries out wide. Veteran centre Makie’s try was the match clincher on the stroke of Full time when it looked like all the momentum was with the Redskins. Congratulations to the Bulls on their first win back in the top competition.

 Teachers West 26 (S Huppatz 1t, T Owen 1t, K Horwood 1t, K Richards 1t, J Fletcher 3c) def Burdekin 15 (R Furnell 1t, S Kennedy 1t 1c 1p).

Teachers West looked to bounce back with vigour against Burdekin after dropping their first game of the year against rivals Brothers at home the week before, whilst the Canetoads had other ideas after building to back to back wins in previous weeks. However the Bulldogs dominated from the outset with hooker Mark Nielsen and hard running centre Paulino Aloisio gaining ascendency early with Teachers leading into the Half time break 19 points to 3 thanks to tries to Seamus Huppatz, Trent Owen and Kit Horwood. After the break the Bulldogs didn’t take a backward step with lightning winger Keil Richards scoring to put Teachers well in front 26 points to 3. But the Canetoads hit back late with some great backline play sending centre Ryan Furnell over along with Brolgas Full back Shane Kennedy to get them within 11 before the final whistle. The Canetoads hooker Nathan Papale played well along with fullback Kennedy against classy opposition.

This weekend, sees the Bye for most of the teams due to the QLD Country Champs taking place in Bundaberg over the weekend with the only 1st grade game on the weekend a catch up game between North Ward and Charters Towers at Dave Thomas oval, a home game for the Bulls. With the rest of the teams taking the Bye weekend to rest up before returning on the 9th and 10th of June.
