Zambrero's First Grade wrap up- Round 6

Round 6 proved to be another great weekend of 1st Grade rugby. Ross River Redskins brought in their 50th celebrations in style at home against North Ward. Brothers Travelled to Casalegno Park in Ayr to face the Burdekin with both teams fresh and eager for a win after a long break due to Easter and the NQ Country Champs. A Confident Teachers West faced off against a Charters Towers Bulls  team willing to improve on their 7-point loss to Redskins in round 5 at Mike Carney Toyota Park.

Teachers West 54 (G Morgan 2t, K Nielson 2t, H Huppatz 1t, C Barlow 1t, A McClymont 1t, J Fletcher 1t 7c) def Charters Towers 14 (S Makie 1t, P Warria 1t, M Burgess 2c).

Teachers West yet again proved their dominance over the TDRU competition with a convincing 40-point win against the developing Charter Towers Bulls side.  Teachers West began the game in convincing fashion, gaining metres with ease and tiring the Bulls with endless pressure in both attack and defence. Teachers West forward pack was far too strong for the Bulls, winning the contest at most scrums, which lead to the bulls conceding several penalties. The reigning premiers worked their way through the Bulls defence, tries scored by Gene Morgan, Kris Nielson and Josh Fletcher, to lead at halftime 40-0. The game was sealed by halftime. However, the break saw a change in attitude in the Bulls. They started the second half with a very strong running game against a tiring Teachers West side, which saw them press the advantage and put their prop, Phillip Warria, in for their first try. Teachers West replied with two tries from their foremost forward pack. Charters Towers ended the game with a spectacular long range try from Samson Makie, to draw the half with the defending Premiers 14 all. Teachers West finished the game impressive 54-14 victors while the Bulls will take confidence from a positive second half display.

Ross River 53 (S Ratoto 2t, L Pakome 2t, N Batimala 1t 3c, E Demesio 3t, S King 1t, N Baasno 1t) def North Ward 7 (L Cavallin 1t, A Rio 1c).

North Ward played Ross River at Bindal Sports Ground in the Redskin’s all important anniversary round. Ross River were coming off back to back wins, which meant they took good form and 50 years of history into what was expected to be a physical encounter. Both teams started the game well, however, the Redskins broke apart the North Ward defence first with the home teams backline running red hot. North Wards errors and some good defensive effort gave the Redskins the majority of the possession and they used it well to be up by multiple tries at half time. The North Ward team hit back with minutes to go before the half time break with a try to centre Lachlan Cavallin, however a runaway individual try to Redskins former QLD Country Number 8 Leo Pakome broke the back of the resurgent North Ward team. After the break it was one way traffic with the Redskins entertaining the large crowd with a memorable victory, doubles were scored by Pakome and Sefa Ratoto, while Noni Batimala crossed once and kicked 3 goals and Elia Demesio scored a trio of tries. Ross River ran on with the game to win 53-7.

Brothers 31 (M Holland 1t, T Harvey 1t, B Morgan 1t, M parker 1t, T Audas-Ryan 1t, A Pyper 2c, J Gough 1c) def Burdekin 7 (L Smith 1t, S Kennedy 1c).

Brothers travelled to the Burdekin just weeks after their last encounter which saw brothers win in a close game. Brothers were eager to stay right behind Teachers West in the race for first place whilst Burdekin needed a win to crack into the top 4. The first half was a close encounter. Both teams tried their hand, pushing passes and playing great running rugby. Brothers capitalised on prolonged possession and Burdekin errors to lead at halftime by 14 points.  To begin the second half, Burdekin took advantage of some early possession in Brother’s half, mounted phases and scored a class try out wide. As the game went on, both teams forced errors but Brothers capitalised on them more scoring a try through the middle to Brendan Morgan and one out wide by Tyron Harvey. Brothers held Burdekin out for the remainder of the game to win 31-7.

This Week, Brothers face Charters towers playing for their 3rd win in a row, while the Bulls are still looking to win their first game of the season. Ross River, coming off a big win against North Ward, face the defending premiers Teachers West, who will try to remain undefeated. The Burdekin will travel to the Sports Reserve to verse North Ward on their home ground, with both teams hoping to bounce back from defeats in round 6 and to keep in touch with the top 4.
