Zambrero’s 1st Grade Wrap Up - Round 4

With Western Suburbs withdrawing from the competition, the Brothers and Western Suburbs game was unable to take place which gave Brothers a week off along with North Ward who had a bye. At Mike Carney Toyota Park, Ross River went up against a favoured Teachers West, and later in the afternoon, Charters Towers were faced off against Burdekin in a classic country clash.

Teachers West 46 def Ross River 5

With both teams coming off the back of a win from the previous round, both were looking to keep their momentum moving into Easter. Teachers West had the momentum early, and with Ross River on the back foot the Bulldogs capitalized scoring their first try early through back rower Marty Brennan. Minutes later it was Rodney Seeto who put on an outstanding individual effort, scoring a great try beating several Ross River defenders. Teachers scored again to look like they would run away with it leading 17 nil after 30 minutes. After some strong runs from Redskins number 8 and former Queensland Country player Leo Pakome, Ross River muscled their way back into the game. Pakome then crossed in the corner to bring his team back into the game just before half time with the score at 17-5. Ross River stayed in the fight after half time but the Teachers West backline converted opportunities into points with centre Gene Morgan scoring the pick of the tries from a great line to score under the posts. From there Teachers ran away with the game, finishing up with 46-5 score. Bulldogs Scrum half Aka Tuala was a standout for Teachers West whilst Redskins Lock and Captain John Cini lead Ross River well.

Burdekin 41 def Charters Towers 17
With Burdekin sitting in 4th on the ladder and Charters Towers in 5th, both teams were desperate for a win. A strong breeze was at the back of Burdekin in the first half and as always they strongly capitalized on it. Playing to their strengths, Queensland Country Heeler Shane Kennedy from the Burdekin stood up and took command of his team. With a great display of direct running in the 3rd channel from Burdekin, they scored 29 first half points but not without letting Charters Towers get a try of their own to lock Josh Robins to stay in the hunt. Charters Towers came out of the sheds firing minimizing mistakes and dominating possession. Charters Towers’ lock, Tom Robertson was a standout for the Bulls. Despite his efforts, and tries to Captain Max Burgess and Robertson the team was unable to force their way back into the game. The Canetaods backline proved too deadly with 5 tries to the men out wide.

This Weekend will see some clashes starting out at Mike Carney Toyota Park Friday night between Teachers West and North Ward from 7:20pm, whilst also on Friday night the Burdekin Canetaods host Brothers in Ayr. On Saturday at Mike Carney Toyota Park Charters Towers will face off against Ross River kicking off at 4pm. Make sure you get along to support your club!
