Zambrero’s 1st Grade Wrap Up - Round 2

With the cobwebs out of the system from the opening week, round 2 of the Zambrero’s 1st Grade Competition proved to be more promising with closer score lines and more competitive games. North Ward hit the road west this week to take on Charters Towers in front of a big local crowd in their return to the top competition. Meanwhile down south the Burdekin hosted Ross River in a tight encounter. Whilst at Mike Carney Toyota Park long time rivals Teachers West and Brothers squared off in front of a spectacular crowd for the match of the round.

North Ward 51 def 28 Charters Towers
The long awaited return to 1st grade from the Charters Towers Bulls may have ended with a disappointing result for the home team however it was a memorable occasion with a great crowd on hand to witness the match. Despite securing a ladder bonus point for 4 tries, Charters Towers just didn’t have enough firepower to answer North Wards direct running from its big forwards with prop John Salee muscling his way over the line twice from close range. Finishing from North Ward backs Ashley Rio and Connor Kennedy who both scored a double proved the difference in securing the win for the Old Boys. The Bulls didn’t lie down and fought hard despite being down 41 points to 7 late in the second half they hit back to score 3 late tries through Billy Mitchell, Samson Makie and Cody Schafer to take momentum into their second game this weekend.

Teachers West 18 def 12 Brothers
A nail biting performance on the weekend between long-time rivals, Teachers West and Brothers gave fans something to cheer about. Kicking things off early, Teachers took an early lead and before Brothers could catch their breath, they were down on the scoreboard 15-5. Struggling to find any ground in set piece play, not a lot was going their way. Struggling against the Teachers West scrum and not being able to execute on their lineouts, The Bulldogs were starting to look like they would run away with the game with early tries to back rowers Alexander McClymont and Seamus Huppatz. However tries from Brothers number 8 Tom Audas and Reserve forward Kieran Willey brought the score to 15-12. As the match descended into an arm wrestle late in the game, Teachers Fly-half Josh Fletcher’s two penalty goals proved the difference in the 18-12 win.

Burdekin 31 def 27 Ross River

With the Cane toads and the Redskins both coming off big losses in Round 1, both teams were desperate for their first win of the season in Ayr. The home team controlled the match from the beginning with the Burdekin backs running red hot with tries to Backs Chris Mann, Andrew Kennedy, Kieran Kerr and Lachlan Smith. Ill-discipline cost the Redskins as three Yellow cards were given out for repeat infringements. A dominant game from Burdekin inside centre Shane Kennedy saw the home team hang on for the win despite being a player down most of the match after a Red Card. The Redskins rallied late in the game and nearly spoiled the locals night with Prop Jesse Tonu scoring a double and fullback Jason Curnow scoring a try as well as adding extras to get them within four points at full time.

This weekend will see a 1st Grade Double Header at Mike Carney Toyota Park with North Ward taking on Brothers in the early game at 4pm followed by Western Suburbs taking on Ross River at 5:30pm. Whilst down the road Teachers West will host newcomers Charters Towers in their first home game of the year at Warrina Park kicking off at 5:30pm. Burdekin will have the Bye this week resting up after winning one from their first two matches.
